A Trip to Town
In August and September 2025 I had the amazing opportunity to take part in the British Council’s Venice Fellowship, where I and a group of other artists and researchers spent a month in Venice, working as invigilators at the British Pavillion at the Venice Architecture Biennale and developing research for a project. What resulted from my month in Venice was a prototype for an interactive installation using little figurines and a playing board, where placing a figurine on a square on the board triggers an animation of its corresponding character to appear as a projection on a wall (or in the case of this prototype, on the computer screen).
I drew up a little square inspired by the many squares I saw while walking through Venice. I love how they ere almost like little hubs of commerce and conversation! It was the perfect environment to place my characters in, as this project is meant to encourage group play and group storytelling. Pick a character and put it on the board, and see it interact with the world around it. What sort of character is it? What sort of stories would you make up for these little guys?
I’d love to develop this project further and make it into a proper big installation, with projectors covering the walls of a room, a bigger playing board and many more figurines. Maybe I could organize workshops for people to create their own characters for me to animate and for others to play with. Exciting stuff!
